Volunteering is a chance to help those in need --
Examples of ways you can help as a volunteer:
Administrative Support: Computer data entry,
preparing mail-outs, filing and file maintenance. Must have working
knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. Help write articles for
newsletter.
Children’s Programs:
Babysitting: Need
individuals that enjoy kids to babysit shelter children for “group”
house-meetings, parenting classes, helping our children’s counselor with
groups, and other activities for our residents as a group where
babysitting is needed so that our residents get the most out of offered
classes. Every once in a while we need sitting during the day, but
mostly these “group” activities will occur in the evening.
Special
Programs: Implement special times for children in regards
to reading, crafts, outdoor activities, possibly get theaters to offer
special pricing for a group movie date, etc.
Client Interaction: Work
directly with clients in a myriad of different ways. This includes such
things as make-up makeovers, haircuts, massage, balancing a checkbook,
etc.
Donation Pick-Up: Need
someone to help Thrift Store and Facilities Managers with picking up
furniture and large item donations on a regular basis. Pickup truck or
trailer helpful but not necessary. Need someone that can lift over 50
pounds.
Fundraising: Help
our fundraising committee organize and implement new and different
fundraising ideas to generate more donations into the center, enabling
us to continue to provide necessary services to victims of domestic
violence and/or sexual assault. Plan, organize, and/or participate in
special events such as annual golf tournament, art and wine auction, and
your ideas!
Good Neighbor Thrift Store: Volunteers
needed in the following areas – someone to help in the back offices
with laundering and folding sheets, blankets, etc. and helping with gift
baskets, donations where donor specifically designates item be given to
clients and not sold in thift store.
Grant-writing: With
today’s economy, it is more and more difficult to obtain grant funds
for program operations. Volunteer needed to work with our staff
grant-writer with research and writing of applications to possible grant
funders.
Hotline/Admin. Desk:
Duties include answering telephone and doorbell. Assist clients with
vouchers for Thrift Store, emergency groceries, and miscellaneous
requests. When comfortable, handle crisis calls concerning family and
sexual violence (Script is provided). Help with special projects, such
as folding and labeling newsletters.
Mechanical maintenance: Volunteer
willing to perform vehicle maintenance and repair at no charge for
labor. Also, general machinery repair and maintenance.
Pantry Duty: General
cleanup and organization of items in our food pantry (outreach and
shelter) and the garage. This ideally would be done at least once per
week, as we continually move client possessions, as well as certain
donations, food from food bank, Sexual assault “on call” supplies, and
paper goods.
Public speaking / Fair
booths: Need a volunteer that can familiarize themselves
with our mission statement and nuts and bolts of the workings of our
shelter. Handle speaking requests in the community and/or setting up and
working different fairs and community functions to increase awareness
of domestic and sexual violence and the far reaching effects it has on
individuals and families.
Recruiting other volunteers: Ongoing
need for new and better ways of recruiting volunteers to help in all
areas of operations.
Run errands / shopping: Volunteer
needed to help weekly with grocery shopping for residents, pick up
other supplies as necessary, help clients get to and from doctor/dentist
appointments, etc.
Shelter Maintenance:
Need handy man/woman that is a “jack of all trades” and can help with
small, general repairs and cleanup on a regular basis. Knowledge of
electrical, plumbing, and/or general carpentry would be most helpful.
Tutoring adults or children: Many
of our clients need help in different areas, such as English, Spanish,
Math, computer skills, preparation for the GED. Need someone willing to
come in on an as needed basis to help clients in different areas.
